Risulta subito evidente che gli alieni sono totalmente diversi dall'uomo, e che possono minacciare l'egemonia terrestre del cosmo, o portare addirittura un'insidia mortale. Una spedizione umana, inviata in missione oltre i confini dello spazio esplorato, arriverà al primo incontro stellare con i Moties, creature portatrici di nuovi e sorprendenti valori.
