iPhone 3.0 Announcement

As most people who follow iPhone developments will already know, Apple previewed iPhone OS 3.0 today. As a developer I am quite pleased with the announced features. I must also say I'm pleasantly surprised, because some of the features, like the new app sales models, I was not expecting so soon, while other features, like networking over Bluetooth, I was not expecting at all. All of the announced features are much needed, though! And many of the features are targeted specifically at third party app developers, to enable them to create even better apps. It shows that Apple is taking third party development on the iPhone very seriously, which, as a third party developer, makes me happy.

I'm also pleased to hear an Apple representative describe the App Store as a "meritocracy," which is what I believe it is and what it should continue to be.

I'll be taking some time tonight to try to get our test hardware updated with the 3.0 beta. We'll be working hard both to ensure compatibility with the upcoming 3.0 release, and to take advantage of the many new capabilities.
